Common questions
Do I need a permit to remodel my kitchen?
It depends on the work and on your city or county. Cosmetic changes may not need one, while moving plumbing or gas lines, adding electrical circuits or changing walls generally does. Your city or county building department sets the rules, so ask about permits at the site visit.
What affects the cost of a kitchen remodel?
Mainly the size of the kitchen, whether plumbing, gas or walls move, the cabinets, counters and appliances you choose, and anything found once walls are opened. We don’t publish prices because every kitchen is different; you get a written estimate after the on-site visit.
How long does a kitchen remodel take?
It depends on the size of the job, lead times for materials such as custom cabinets, and permits and inspections. We can talk through timing for your kitchen at the site visit.
Can I live at home during a kitchen remodel?
Many people do. It helps to set up a temporary kitchen elsewhere in the house, such as a microwave and a small fridge, and to expect some dust and noise while work is underway.

How do I check that a contractor is licensed?
Look up the license number on the Contractors State License Board website, which shows whether a license is active and what it covers. JD Green Construction’s California license number is 1045554.
How much should I pay up front?
For home improvement contracts, the Contractors State License Board advises that a down payment be no more than 10% of the contract price or $1,000, whichever is less, and that you pay only as work is completed. See CSLB’s homeowner checklists.
