Common questions
What does a general contractor do?
A general contractor runs the whole job: planning, scheduling, hiring and coordinating trades, and making sure the work meets the plans and code, so you have one point of contact.
How do I check that a contractor is licensed?
Look up the license number on the Contractors State License Board website, which shows whether a license is active and what it covers. JD Green Construction’s California license number is 1045554.
How much should I pay up front?
For home improvement contracts, the Contractors State License Board advises that a down payment be no more than 10% of the contract price or $1,000, whichever is less, and that you pay only as work is completed. See CSLB’s homeowner checklists.
What should be in a home improvement contract?
At minimum: the scope of work, the price, the payment schedule and the start and completion details. The CSLB notes that “changes or additions to your contract must all be in writing.” CSLB checklists.
Should I just pick the lowest bid?
Compare what each bid includes, not only the price. A lower number can leave out work that another bid includes.
Does my home project need a permit?
Many do, especially structural, plumbing, electrical and mechanical work. Your city or county building department sets the rules, so ask about permits at the site visit.
